Capoeira Angola

Capoeira Angola is a martial art dance form that has origins in Central and Western Africa and was developed in Brazil by captured Africans and indigenous Brazilians as a means of liberation from oppression. It is accompanied by music. Most songs are sung in Portuguese. Students will learn movement, music, and traditions of the art form passed down to us from the masters.

Taganyahu has been practicing Capoeira Angola for more than two decades. He first traveled to Salvador, Bahia in 2000 and began learning Portuguese, Brazilian percussion and Capoeira Angola. He joined the Academy of Mestre João Grande in New York. For the next fifteen years he lived between New York and Salvador, training Capoeira with Mestre Boca do Rio of Grupo Zimba, Mestre Chicago of Low Country Capoeira Angola Society and continues to practice with Mestre Chorão of Grupo de Capoeira Angola do Acupe. In 2019, Mestre Chorão gave Taganyahu the title of Professor. He continues to teach in the Hudson Valley and in Brooklyn.

Taganyahu’s mission is to honor his ancestors, uphold the traditions of Capoeira Angola and to hold space for others who are seeking liberation.
